Zuko apologizing to Iroh is another really painful scene.
He stands outside that tent, afraid to walk in, terrified that Iroh will reject him. He’s from a family that has done way worse for less - Ozai permanently scarred his face and banished him for speaking out of turn. Zuko knows that Iroh loved him. But he thinks he’s screwed up irredeemably.
Zuko waited by Iroh’s side all night, then made his apology to Iroh’s back. It was such a relief when Iroh hugged him. The first time I watched that, I think I was holding my breath through Zuko’s apology.
Through their hug, they’re both crying, and Zuko asks in complete shock how Iroh could forgive him. And that right there is why apologizing to Iroh was the bravest thing Zuko has ever done. Because he didn’t expect forgiveness, and even after everything, he didn’t fully comprehend the extent of Iroh’s unconditional love for him until that instant.
No matter how many mistakes Zuko does, Iroh will always love and accept him. And that’s the most beautiful thing.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau by Rasmus Weng Karlsen for Euroman (October 2014)
I didn’t fall in love with you. I walked into love with you, with my eyes wide open, choosing to take every step along the way.
master ship list | Ian O’Shea and Wanderer (The Host)
“I, the soul named Wanderer, love you, human Ian and that will never change no matter what I might become. If I were a Dolphin or a Bear or a Flower, it wouldn’t matter. I would always love you, always remember you. You will be my only partner.”

When you’ve been abused by a parent like that dealing with anything afterwords is terrifying.
I can only imagine the emotions Zuko was feeling when he apologised to Iroh there.
^This is one of the reasons that I think going in to apologize to Iroh is one of the bravest things that Zuko’s ever done, because of how much it must have terrified him to do so (Iroh would never hurt Zuko like that, but that fear had to have been at the top of Zuko’s mind at this moment)
And why I love Iroh so, so much for being who he is.
